Leveraging Success of Young Scholars in Business Discipline
Abstract
In this monograph the team of authors originating from 4 countries focuses on factors contributing to the research success, especially publication success, of business scholars in the so-called Visegrad Countries (V4), embracing the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia, as representatives of the post-communist Europe. Considering prior international research devoted to scholars’ success, we decided to include both: analysis of institutional factors that may influence publication productivity of V4 scholars (e.g. existing principles of academic promotion systems in particular countries) and V4 scholars’ perceptions with regard to their scientific activities and factors that may stimulate their success. In our research project, we first analyzed and described academic promotion systems in V4 countries. Part I of the monograph is fully devoted to these issues and is divided into 4 chapters (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia). Thus, the first part of the monograph makes the secondary sources context for the empirical research results that are presented in Part II. The Part II uses results of two field studies: semi-structured interviews and survey conducted among young business scholars from all Visegrad Countries. The interview results are presented firstly here as this was an explorative stage that enabled in-depth look into factors evoking research productivity of young scholars, e.g. academic networking, generational clash, English language skills or personality traits. Next, we present the results of the international survey. The survey results elaborate of selected factors associated conceptually with research success and they are grouped into: research – related competences and other personal features, organizational issues and academic networking. Finally we present survey results with regard to research productivity, e.g. publications in journals, including ISI top ranked journals. The reader that is interested to have a brief look at the research project and its results may start reading from Introduction and research summary that is presented at the beginning of the monograph.
