Abstract
Abstract: The language of the image - preliminary remarks on the possible use of representations to develop language and intercultural skills illustrated with an example of the Last Judgement from Torcello (summary) The aim of the article is to underline the important role of the image in the process of teaching Italian as a foreign language. Author focuses on the use of the chosen work of art (representation of the Last Judgement from the west wall of Basilica Santa Maria Assunta in Torcello, Italy), as a means of conveying the presented topics and, what is more, further meanings and cultural contexts. Because of that the work of art constitutes a rich material for teaching a foreign language. The article is divided into three main parts. In the first one, author presents the results of the survey devoted to cultural elements in the process of teaching Italian language. Then, she provides a brief description of the chosen work of art. In the final part, there are the examples of different exercises that allow to use the work of art during the lesson. They are divided into four groups according to four different language skills.
