The Evolution of the Ophthalmic Surgical Microscope

Abstract
The use of magnification in eye surgery goes back to the 19th century and consisted of a spectacle frame with single plus lenses worn towards the end of the nose. The ophthalmic operating microscope was first introduced in the 1950s but was slow to take off. This paper will explain the reluctance to adopt this new tool and the early developments that have led to today’s sophisticated microscope
