The research design of political and legal doctrines by prof. G. L. Seidler was one of the first attempts at a complex presentation of the methodological issues of the discipline. At the start of his scientific career, Grzegorz Leopold Seidler remained under a strong influence of communist thought, particularly its methodological directives stemming from the dialectic and historical materialism. There appeared the paradigm of the class character of doctrines as the genus proximum of their definitions. Over the 1960s and 70s the Marxist rigidity in G. L. Seidler’s ideas gets significantly weaker, although nothing changes within his formal view-of-the-world and political declarations. What may be recognized as the landmark is the work concerning the postulate of multidimensional study of law. This is a turning point in the methodological constructions of G. L. Seidler. As a matter of fact, it becomes generally accepted, frequently under the name of the concept of multi-plane study of law. Grzegorz Leopold Seidler had never announced the departure from the elements of Marxist methodology, spectacular in its form. However, he consistently shared the approach, quite common within the environment of Polish history of political and legal doctrines, which recognized that the study of thought cannot be separated from the material sources of its origin, i.e. the specific historical situation, nor should one avoid the study of the influence a given doctrine exerted on the environment. Nowadays, these two permanent postulates belong to the canon of the historical method, and are also applied by authors representing clearly opposing view-of-the-world approaches. This methodological assumption is shared today by the most prominent representatives of historical sciences, including our own discipline.pl_PL
