The aim of the study was to compare the opinions of respondents from Poland and Slovakia on the idea of “fair play”, its role and place in their society. The study included response of 950 individuals (625 from Poland and 325 from Slovakia). The empirical material was collected with the questionnaire survey. The results indicate a statistically significant relationship between the opinions of the respondents and their country of origin. Nearly half of Poles considered that “fair play” played an important role in their society, while almost half of respondents from Slovakia disagreed. This means that the Poles appreciate the spirit of rivalry in their people more positively than Slovakians. Both groups expressed the opinion that there are lack sufficient space for “fair play” in the media in their countries. In this context Slovakians are more dissatisfied than Poles. Representatives of both nations declare vigorous opposition to the statement that the cheating, using of prohibited substances and illegal methods in sport and everyday life is acceptable. Such opinions were more often expressed by the respondents from Slovakia. whereas, respondents from Poland understand “fair play” in wider sense. In the vast majority, respondents voted for a completely doping-free sport. Slovakian’s opinions were more radical.
