Abstract

Metaphysics in New Polish Poetry. Forms of Presence and Absence

The article traces the uses of metaphysical themes in new Polish poetry by looking at the ways in which authors like Wojciech Wencel o Dariusz Suska deal with the inexpressible. Just as absence and presence are terms describing the fundamental metaphysical states of being, there are two approaches to metaphysics in new Polish poetry. One revolves around the questions of the nature of being, God, existence and death, while the other seeks poetic answers to the problems which appear to be unanswerable. The first strategy proves to be more relevant for poetry, because metaphysical uncertainty challenges poets to search for new means of artistic expression.
