Streszczenie
Beginnings of the castle in Wieluń are connected with the King of Poland Casimir IV The Great (1333-1370). But the first mention about castrum Wielun in written sources comes from 1311 r. It has never been settled when was the castle built, though there can be found several conjectures that due to city’s location in second half of 13th century. After the death of the Casimir IV The Great, the castle and the city were in the hands of Vladislaus II, duke of Opole (1356-1401) and became the centre of Wieluń Principality (1370–1392). In the further centuries it had been a royal residency and seat of royal governors. The castle had burnt in 1791 and shortly after that was demolished. In 19th on its place a classicistic palace was built. Article summarized knowledge about castle. Authors are trying to recreate the plan of, now non-existent, stronghold. The article is a first part, discussing the castle’s history and historical sources. In the second part (will be published in the next volume of „Rocznik Wieluński”) authors will be trying to reconstruct the evolution of the spacious stronghold based on historical sources and results of architectonic observations.
