Tłumaczenie sądowe w Polsce. Analiza rynku

Abstract

Under recently issued EU regulations any person who does not speak the officia language of a given member-state has the right to be aided by an interpreter in criminal proceedings. Hence court interpreters have an important role to play and special training centres ought to be run in each EU country. Today in Poland there are over ten thousand certified interpreters using 46 different languages. To date the demand for court interpretation services has not been the subject of any detailed study. This article opens new vistas for improvement by showing trends in the court translation market, as it makes an analysis of the ratio of supply to demand for this service. This work is based on data obtained from a questionnaire filled out by the users of interpretation services, i.e., some Polish law courts. The data collected in this pilot study show the frequency of interpreters participation in judicial proceedings and the languages involved. These results can prove useful in practice, e.g., when making decisions about desirable alternative forms for court interpreter training in Poland.
