Kobiecy symbol apokaliptyczny w reformatorskiej interpretacji– Wielka Nierządnica i Výklad na Zjevenie svatého Jana Jakoubka ze Stříbra
Streszczenie
The aim of the article is to show the Whore of Babylon as presented by Jacob of Mies in
his Výklad na Zjevenie (Explanation on the Book of Revelation). Jakoubek referred to
the apocalyptic character frequently (close to 50 times in the whole of his work), but the
remarks are scattered and it is not easy to gather them in one, coherent image. Instead of
building a definition, he used biblical images (like Jezebel, Babylon) and exposed those
features which let him explain his own vision of the figure. An important metaphor he
uses is that of the false Christ’s bride confronted with vera sponsa Christi – a concept
very popular in the Middle Ages to describe relation between the Church and Christ.
Jacob shows the Whore of Babylon as a hypocritical gathering of the clergy serving their
own lust and needs, whose end is ineluctable and will be caused by a riot of the people
once seduced and kept under their rule.
