We start talking about the beginning of the flu season from the end of September, but the peak of
illness falls in February, March and April, and individual cases are recorded throughout the year. This season,
from the beginning of September 2018 until the end of April 2019, 2 969 280 cases of influenza were
recorded in Poland, of which 15 242 required hospitalization and 146 resulted in death.
Influenza is an acute infectious disease caused by influenza viruses. The infection is transmitted by
droplets or by contact with the contaminated surface. The incubation period lasts 1 to 4 days. Destruction of
respiratory epithelium by the virus facilitates bacterial overgrowth. The symptoms of influenza are: cough,
sore throat, sudden high fever above 38oC, chills, muscle and joint pain, headache, chest pain, general malaise,
lack of appetite, nausea and vomiting. Uncomplicated illness lasts about 7 days.
In our work, we want to present not only epidemiological reports and data collected from this year's
influenza season, but also bring up the course of the last official epidemic, as well as general knowledge about
favourable behaviours in periods of increased incidence of influenza.
We believe that good understanding of the basics of prevention, post-exposure management and
treatment can contribute to reduction of the number of cases in subsequent seasons.
