i lubiany.
The main research issue was to recognise how geographical education at its different levels is perceived in Poland. The overarching goal of this research was an attempt to recognise what role and position are given to geographical education in the overall country’s education, what are its tasks, how educational values of geography are applied, and how the quality of geographical education is perceived and assessed at school and university level in Poland.
A significant methodological assumption was to carry out the research using quantitative and qualitative techniques. Quantitative research was carried out on a group of 1,000 people, representatives of Polish society, and a group made up of university staff – 102 geographers. The research was performed using the CAWI method. Qualitative research was complemented by a Focus Group Interview (FGI).
The research proves that geography perceived as a school subject is interesting and liked. However, it is primarily associated with the skills of using a map and outdoor orientation. Geography stands out as a subject frequently chosen by high-school students for their final exam, but at the same time there is very little interest in choosing it as a university major. Negative opinions and stereotypes developed throughout many decades have significantly influenced the assessment of the social role and position of geographical education; the subject is still viewed as descriptive, and much less as explanatory and practical knowledge. Narrow specialisation in geography as an area of science is reflected in curricula, which adversely affects the structure of students’ knowledge, thus limiting its synthesising role to a great degree. It is also not conducive to geographical education at school. The social role of geographical education is closely related to the position of geography as science. The stronger this position is the greater the chances of geography playing a more significant role in school education, and vice versa. There is a clear need to create a stronger community of geographers not only at the level of disciplines and subdisciplines, but also regarding a common concern for the development and high quality of school and university education in the field of geography.
