The Creation of Geoparks in Poland requires the designation of prospective areas, which are characterized by a unique geo–diversity. The main criteria for selection should be the representativeness of the geo–sites as well as good cooperation between local governments and public support for such initiatives. This is the procedure required for the creation of UNESCO Geoparks. Of particular importance in this respect are the border areas where development can promote Geo–tourism. Special attention has to be paid due to the diversity of landscape features and geological merit of the Carpathians – a mountain range in Central Europe. The Geological heritage of the area is likely to be protected and promoted through the creation of Geoparks. For this initiative, in the Polish part of the Carpathians is the distinctive region Pieniny. In the framework of the Polish–Slovak cooperation, preparatory studies began for this region. The Pieniny Geopark covers the area of the Pieniny Klippen Belt both on the Polish and Slovak side, together with adjacent areas namely: Pieniny, Little Pieniny, Spissian Pieniny, Podhale Rocks, Lubovnianska Pahorkatina and Oravska Magura. The specificity of the Pieniny Klippen Belt is that it is a unique area which is the result of a complex geological structure resulting from the multi–stage history of the formation of this structure. Here has been the destination of numerous geological excursions, ranging from school trips, general geology field courses for first year students organized by the Polish, Slovak and Czech universities, and also special tours organized in the framework of the international geological congress. Tourists can admire an excellent illustration of the various processes of physical geology. It is possible to study the history of geological research and mining, rock and mineral resources, mineral water, the elements of mineralogy and petrography, the use of stone in architecture. The future management entity of the Geopark may well be a consortium of the Pieniny National Park and the proposed Pieniny Small Landscape Park. The primary task in the framework of this project will be an inventory and valuing for the establishment of Geological Geopark. The biggest problem may be the legal regulations concerning the operation of such facilities as well as the small role of the local government in Poland. A specific feature of the geopark is its international importance, however, the local character is also significant in its functioning, and therefore it is important that there is an agreement on the municipal level.pl_PL
Oblasť Geoparku Pieniny zahŕňa pieninské bradlové pásmo na poľskej a slovenskej strane vrátane priľahlých oblastí – Centrálne Pieniny, Malé Pieniny, Spišské Pieniny, bradlá regiónu Podhale, Ľubovnianska pahorkatina, Oravská Magura.
