AIMS OF INTERCULTURAL EDUCATION IN THE CONTEXT OF PROBLEMS OF THE MULTICULTURAL WORLD The author assumes that intercultural education is shaped and developed in the context of the problems which are growing in the multicultural world. It is also indicated that the policy of multiculturalism, based on the ideology of pluralism and citizenship, as well as the principles of liberalism and democratisation of social life, has been badly managed, so now it is a subject of contestation. The consequence is an increase in separatist behaviour, religious and national fundamentalism, racism, intolerance etc. In the context of the above, the author points to the aims of intercultural education such as dispelling fears, prejudices, stereotypes, and a whole range of myths associated with the loss of cultural heritage. The activities which are undertaken through continuous process of learning and raising intercultural awareness attempt to reconcile the functions of national states with the principles of multiculturalism. The aim of intercultural education is to work with myths, stereotypes, prejudices, and false beliefs in order to reveal the ideology and increase public consciousness of their negative impact which hinders the functioning of multicultural societies.
