O początkach międzynarodowego ruchu romskiego (na 40-lecie Światowego Kongresu Romów – 1971)

Abstract

Forty years ago in April 1971 in Orpington around London, the First Romani Union Congress took place, with 23 representatives from 14 countries, including the author of this article. Currently the IRU unites 30 Roma organizations from Europe and 4 from overseas: Canada, The USA, Mexico and Israel. It is obvious that the Romani elite taking part in the movement are not the sole representatives of the various groups of Roma/Gypsies, Sinti, Gitanes, Manush, Travellers etc. Nevertheless, this is the strongest movement in Europe, which is even more important in times of growing aversion towards Roma citizens in the continent. For many years the 8th of April, when the Romani flag and anthem were proclaimed, has been the celebration day for all Romani groups in Europe, America, Australia and India.
