“Der Bielitzer Zion” was the German name that was used in the 18th and 19th centuries for the town district in the Bielitz Stadt (present Bielsko-Biala) which was inhabited by the members of a Lutheran parish. The group of Lutherans who lived and worked in rapidly changing 19th-century Bielsko is an ideal example of the “city-in- -the-city“ structure. The aim of this article is to outline the main conceptions of anthropological research done on the mentioned population, based on parish register analysis and historical sources. Selected possibilities of obtaining main bio-demographic conclusions for the Lutherans population and, by extrapolation, for the entire contemporary population of Bielsko will be shown. Parish registers, namely, the Death Record, the Marriage Record and the Baptism Register of the Lutheran Church of the Saviour in Bielsko-Biala are completely unique research material. Records were made over a long period and their good state of preservation, together with the high proportion of Lutherans in the whole population of Bielsko, fulfils the methodological requirements for analysis in the field of historical demography. The relatively high precision of notation and information objectivity of the parish records is also the main assumption of anthropological analyses, such as the elucidation of the biological state of the population (e.g. disease frequency), catastrophic occurrences (epidemic, fire) or demographic transitions which took place in a given locality.
