Sanktuarium Krzyża Świętego w Krakowie-Mogile jest najbardziej znanym ośrodkiem kultu Pana Jezusa Ukrzyżowanego w Polsce do którego w ostatnich latach pielgrzymuje w ciągu roku około 150 tys. osób. Sanktuarium w Mogile należy także do najstarszych sanktuariów Pańskich w kraju. Nabożeństwo do Męki Pańskiej sięga tu swymi początkami pierwszej poł. XIII w. Analiza ruchu pielgrzymkowego do sanktuarium Krzyża Świętego w Krakowie-Mogile została wykonana dla okresu 1993-2002, w oparciu o prowadzoną w ośrodku rejestrację grup pielgrzymkowych. W analizowanym okresie liczba zerejstrowanych w sanktuarium grup pielgrzymkowych wzrosła niemal pięciokrotnie. Największy wzrost liczby grup zanotowano w latach 1994-1995 (182%). Najwięcej grup zarejestrowano w sanktuarium w 2002 r. W sumie z metropolii krakowskiej (diecezja krakowska, tarnowska, kielecka i bielsko-żywiecka) przybyło łącznie 40% ogólnej liczby pielgrzymów i ponad 46% ogółu zarejestrowanych grup pielgrzymkowych.pl_PL
Pilgrimages to the Holy Cross Sanctuary in Kraków-Mogiła The study presented in the article is concerned with the forms and size of the pilgrimage movement at the Holy Cross Sanctuary in Kraków-Mogiła. Also the analysis of the range of influence of that center has been carried out. The Holy Cross Sanctuary in Kraków-Mogiła is the best known center of worship of Crucified Lord Jesus in Poland. It also belongs to the oldest sanctuaries of Lord Jesus in this country. The principal object of worship in that sanctuary is the miracle-working sculpted portrayal of Crucified Christ. The origin of the crucifix is unknown, since no source documents are in existence. According to old tradition, the crucifix has been in Mogiła since 1222, when the monastery was founded there by Cistercian Monks. Archival materials confirm that fact that as early as the mid-13th century pilgrimages would be visiting the shrine and pilgrims would leave the first votive offerings here. The analysis of the pilgrimage movement coming to the Holy Cross Sanctuary in Kraków-Mogiła covers the period from 1993 to 2002 and it is based on the registers of pilgrimage groups kept in the sanctuary. In the analyzed period, the largest number of groups in the sanctuary was recorded in 2002. There were 398 group then, which in total amounted to 22,000 pilgrims. In the period from 1993 to 2002, the number of the pilgrimage groups registered in the sanctuary increased almost five times. The registered pilgrimage movement accounts for about 25-30% of all pilgrims visiting Kraków-Mogiła. According to the data provided by the Cistercian Fathers, in the recent years, as many as 150,000 pilgrims a year visit the sanctuary. The largest numbers of pilgrims are registered in the sanctuary during the octave of the Elevation of the Holy Cross Holiday, during the Holy Week and on each first Friday of the month. The main religious festival, involving a pardon, which is the Elevation of the Holy Cross Holiday, gathers every year about 50,000 pilgrims from parishes in Kraków as well as from the whole Metropolis of Kraków. Crowds of pilgrims come also to the First Friday celebrations including a nightlong vigil, which on average attracts about 40-50 pilgrimage groups. The range of the spatial influence of the sanctuary covers mostly the region of southern and south-eastern Poland. The largest number of pilgrims that was recorded came from the Diocese of Kraków (23% of the total number), and then from the Dioceses of Katowice, Tarnów, Bielsko and Żywiec, Kielce and Wrocław. The north-western and northern part of the country has the smallest share in the pilgrimage movement coming to this center. From the early 1990s the number of foreign pilgrims visiting the center has been growing systematically. The supra-diocese status of the sanctuary is probably not going to change in the nearest future. Undoubtedly, the most important factors that may influence this situation, apart from the centuries-long pilgrimage tradition, include also the rich history of the place, the unique architectural and cultural values of the abbey, a rich program prepared by the guardians of the sanctuary, as well as the location of the center on the crossroads of many pilgrimage routes.
