dc.description.abstract | The mid-eighties of the 19th century was a period of the increasing interest in non-material spheres re-lated to the crisis of scientism faith. This redefinition was taking place in the atmosphere of disappointment with philosophical and ethical ideas which were not able to satisfy the most basic, non-material needs and yearnings. The ideological transformation undergoing at that time, not only resulted in an overall increase of interest in the secret/occult knowledge but also was translated into the field of literature. A wave of fascina-tion with “unnamed” brought about a growing number of occult motives especially in works of second-rate writers belonging to the second generation of positivists. The interests were presented not only as motives related to spiritualism, mediumism, theosophy and hypnotic practices but also as a fascination of evil issues — its origins, spread and functioning in reality. Artistic works that explore a similar theme correspond to the Gothic aesthetic; however, as the author claims and proves, these references are not always conscious or intentional. | pl_PL |
