Abstract

The author of this publication is aware of the scarcity of professional literature concerning the natural acoustics of church interiors. The article presents some general issues concerning the acoustics of modern sacred space, which hasn’t been observed for a long time. Here the attention was paid to the new materials used for construction, as well as new projects of the present-day temples, which are significantly different from those from before a few centuries. The author’s aim is to educate architects to verify their designs of churches in terms of sound with a person skilled in this field. It should be noted that often the verbal clarity of communication in the modern church buildings is not good. Architects focus on visual aspects, but not on aural ones. Poorly designed church acoustics interfere with the speech intelligibility preached by the priest. Hence, it is significant to illustrate how to design the acoustics of sacred interiors.
