The aim of this text is to present the methodological instruments which are offered in Gregory Bateson’s cybernetic epistemology and which are designed to the role of data collection and data processing. Cybernetic methodology is rather implicit in the Bateson’s theory. Despite of this, his methodological insights and specific proposals form part of the compatible theoretical system, which he built. Hence the analysis focused on discovering in Bateson’s theory cohesive methodological position is interesting. The holistic thinking and the idea of ecosystem defines the ways of understanding the role of the researcher and his opportunities for credible cognition. At the starting point of the text discussion is the concept of the mind as a system capable of creating other systems. In the context of this concept a key role in the development of Bateson’s epistemology and methodology have played theories of Alfred Korzybski and Bertrand Russell. Among the fundamental foundations made in the text are those that identify Bateson’s position with epistemological representationalism and methodological determinism. Among the fundamental foundations made in the text are those that identify Bateson’s position with epistemological representationalism and methodological determinism. But aware that the results of cognition depend on the used instruments. In this context Bateson’s attitude to increase the accuracy of observations was also shown. The Bateson’s methodology has been subordinated to this idea of accuracy. Especially expression of this idea is dual description and the method of multiple comparisons. Both were subjected to closer scrutiny in the presented text. The text also presents the issue of data coding and reasoning, in which the data are used. In the presented analysis and discussion the point of reference was the issues and the concepts that are already registered as permanent elements in the landscape of social research methodology.
