Abstract

The visit of the Metropolitan Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela, Julián Barrio Barrio, to Poland, on April 30 through May 3, 2010, was without doubt the most important event of the year of St. James the Apostle in this country. The main goal of the Archbishop’s visit was to encourage the Polish people to visit the grave of St. James the Great during the jubilee year. During the first day of his visit, on April 30, His Excellency Barrio Barrio visited the Pilgrimage Sanctuary of St. James the Great in Jakubów, and then he unveiled a memorial shell of St. James at St. James mineshaft at the mining facility in Polkowice-Sieroszowice. The next day His Excellency took part in the first Congress of St. James and in the 3rd National Pilgrimage of worshippers of St. James the Great, both at Jasna Góra National Shrine. Later he met with Stanisław Nowak, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Częstochowa, and then he came to Kraków. On May 2, 2010 Archbishop Barrio Barrio went to Więcławice Stare, and then to Polanowice, from where he took a 20km trip along the Małopolska Way of St. James (The Lesser Polish Way of St. James). The main event of the visit to Małopolska was the Holy Mass, conducted by His Excellency, in the parish church of Więcławice Stare. In the afternoon Archbishop Barrio Barrio visited the Sanctuary of the Divine Mercy in Kraków-Łagiewniki, the Royal Cathedral on the Wawel Hill and the Main Square. During the last day of his visit to Poland (May 3) he met with His Eminence Stanisław Cardinal Dziwisz in the Palace of Bishops of Kraków.
